Raised in Syndenham, London, he was the second son of a lounge singer and a dressmaker turned dancer. Statham was a member of the 1988 British Olympic Team in Seoul, Korea, and remained on the National Diving Squad for ten years. He got the audition for his debut role as Bacon in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) through French Connection, for whom he was modeling, as they became a major investor in the film and introduced Statham to director Guy Ritchie. Ritchie invited him to audition for a part in the film by challenging him to impersonate an illegal street vendor and convince him to purchase fake jewelry. After the success of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Statham teamed up again with Ritchie for Snatch (2000), co-starring Brad Pitt, Dennis Farina, and Benicio Del Toro. Then, came Turn It Up (2000), followed by a supporting role in the sci-fi film Ghosts of Mars (2001), The One (2001), and Mean Machine (2001). Statham finally was cast as the lead role of Frank Martin in The Transporter (2002).
