Jim attended Quaker boarding school in Reading, England before applying for a place at an art school. His heart was in acting and would later transfer to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. After his graduation in 1972, he began his professional career on the stage, performing with the Royal National Theatre. Broadbent made his film debut with a small part in The Shout (1978). Through his collaboration with director Leigh, Broadbent first became known to international film audiences. In 1991, he starred in Leigh's Life Is Sweet, a domestic comedy that cast him as a good-natured cook who dreams of running his own business. Broadbent gained further visibility when he starred in The Crying Game and Enchanted April. Then, he could subsequently be seen in various films such as Bullets Over Broadway (1994), Widows' Peak (1994), Richard III (1996), and Little Voice (1998). 2001 is quite a marquee year for Broadbent as he took on a supporting role as Renee Zellweger’s father in Bridget Jones' Diary and starred as Zidler in Moulin Rouge opposite Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman.
