The grandson of Bernard Lee, an
actor who was well-known as M in the James Bond
movies, and the son of Alan Miller, a stage actor
in the ‘50s and ‘60s, Jonny Lee Miller
has been interested in the theater from an early
age. He participated in a number of school productions
and made his television debut at the age of 11,
in the miniseries Mansfield Park (1983).
After appearing in a number of other productions,
including Prime Suspect 3 (1993),
Miller finally made his film debut in Hackers (1995).
His turn as a cyberpunk in the film gave him a wider
audience and an introduction to co-star Angelina
Jolie, whom he would marry in 1995 (they
divorced in 1999).
Miller's big break came with his role as the Sean
Connery-obsessed Sick Boy in Trainspotting (1996).
The film became an international hit, boosting his
career and his co-stars, Ewan McGregor and Robert
Carlyle.
Miller next co-starred with Nick Nolte, Lara Flynn
Boyle, and Julie Christie, in the relationship drama
Afterglow (1997). In
1999, he reunited with Robert Carlyle in Plunkett
& Macleane (1999)
which also featured Liv Tyler.
