Biography:

Following his graduation from St. Louis' Washington University, Sarsgaard studied at the Actors' Studio in New York. After he completed his studies, he was cast in several off-Broadway productions.

Sarsgaard made his film debut in Dead Man Walking (1995) and had his first substantial role in The Man in the Iron Mask (1998). In 1999, he broke out of obscurity with his role in Boys Don't Cry in which he cast as a violent yet charismatic ex-con. Sarsgaard managed to stand out in a film full of strong performances, and the film's success gave him an introduction to a wide audience. His increased profile was reflected in his next films, including Unconditional Love (2002), a drama about a woman who joins forces with the fans of a dead pop star to track down the star's murderer.

Sarsgaard reached a new level of acclaim with his supporting performances in two highly praised films: the journalist drama Shattered Glass (2003) that earned him a Golden Globe’s Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of dedicated, soft-spoken New Republic editor Chuck Lane; and the biography film Kinsey (2004) in which he played the curious, bisexual assistant and lover of the sex researcher.

After starring the memorable role of a gravedigger in the Garden State (2004), Sarsgaard broke through to mass audiences in the big-budget supernatural thriller The Skeleton Key (2005), the blockbuster Flightplan (2005), and the war memoir Jarhead (2005).
