Biography: |
|
Born on 3 July 1962, in Syracuse,
New York, Tom Cruise, moved from town to town with
his family as a child. A high school wrestler, Cruise
went into acting after getting a knee injury. The
memorization aspect of acting helped him overcome
his dyslexia.
In 1980, Cruise moved to New York and worked several
odd jobs before starring his film debut in Endless
Love (1981). His first
big hit was Risky Business (1982),
in which he had famous scene wherein he celebrates
his parents' absence by dancing around the living
room in his underwear. The Hollywood press began
naming Cruise as one of the ‘Brat Pack’,
a group of young actors who seemed to take over
the movie industry in early '80s.
His next film, Top Gun (1985)
established Cruise as an action star, followed by
The Color of Money (1986)
which earned his co-star, Paul Newman, an Oscar.
In 1988, Cruise had one of his most challenging
roles as the brother of autistic Dustin Hoffman
in Rain Man. In Born on the Fourth of July (1989),
he gave his most outstanding performance as paraplegic
Vietnam vet Ron Kovic.
Even though his next film, Far and Away (1990),
in which Cruise starred with Nicole Kidman, was
dissatisfied, Cruise was back in form with A Few
Good Men (1992). In
1994, Cruise appeared as the vampire Lestat in Interview
with the Vampire.
In 1996, Cruise scored big success with the big-budget
Mission Impossible, and received an Oscar nomination
for his performance in Jerry Maguire, in which he
proved once again why he is considered a major Hollywood
actor.
Cruise reunited with Nicole Kidman in Eyes Wide
Shut (1999) which had
been the subject of controversy, rumor, and speculation
since it began filming. His status was again solidified
when he earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination
for his role in Magnolia (1999).
In 2000, Cruise scored again when he returned as
international agent Ethan Hunt in MI:2. He then
re-teamed with Jerry Maguire director, Cameron Crowe,
for Vanilla Sky (2001).
It was followed by massively successful sci-fi chase
film Minority Report (2001)
which was directed by Steven Spielberg. Two years
later, Cruise returned to the big screen in The
Last Samurai (2003).
Following his separation from Penelope Cruz whom
he met during the filming of Vanilla Sky, Cruise
now is dating Katie Holmes, star of Dawson Creek,
who gave birth to a baby girl recently. Now, Cruise
returned with his latest film, Mission Impossible
III. |
