|
Nia Long was born on 30 October
1970, in Brooklyn, New York, to Doc and Talita Long.
Following the divorce of her parents when she was
two years old, she moved with her mother to Iowa
City, Iowa, where her mother studied fine arts.
They then moved to South Central Los Angeles when
Nia was seven.
Nia was interested in acting since an early age.
She received training from Betty Bridges, mother
of former child star Todd Bridges. She landed her
television debut on the soap opera Guiding Light
from 1991 to 1993 and became famous for her role
on the popular sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel Air, in
which she was cast as Will Smith's lover.
In 1991, Nia made her film debut starring alongside
Cuba Gooding Jr., Ice Cube, Angela Basset, and Lawrence
Fishburne in Boyz 'N the Hood, which was followed
by Made in America (1993),
a comedy film in which she was cast as the daughter
of Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson.
Nia established herself as a strong actress in romantic
dramas and comedies when she starred in such films
as Soul Food (1997),
Love Jones (1997),
and The Best Man (1999).
She also demonstrated her acting skill in other
genre films from the supernatural horror Stigmata
(1999) to the police
thriller In Too Deep (1999)
to the big business crime drama Boiler Room (2000).
