In the early '80s, Madsen made her way to Hollywood and made her film debut at the age of 19 in the teen sex comedy Class (1983), which was followed by more notable roles in the science fiction epic Dune (1984) and the romantic comedy Electric Dreams (1984). After appearing as supporting roles in such films as Slam Dance (1987), the comedies Hot to Trot (1988) and Mr. North (1988), Madsen made a memorable turn opposite Don Johnson in The Hot Spot (1990) and raked in some box-office cash in the horror hit Candyman (1992). Following her small performances in the prestige film Ghosts of Mississippi (1996) and The Rainmaker (1997), Madsen disappeared from feature films as most of her films were made for television. Despite her significant recurring roles on television series Frasier (1999) and American Dreams (2002), it was in Sideways (2004) that Madsen had her role of a lifetime.
