Biography: |

The first of two daughters, Vanessa
Carlton was born on 16 August 1980 in a small town
Milford, Pennsylvania, to Ed and Heidi Carlton.
Her mother was a piano teacher, and introduced her
to classical music from a young age. By age two,
she started playing the piano, and became obsessed
with ballet at age nine.
At age 14, Vanessa was accepted into the School
of American Ballet in New York, where she lived
in a dorm in the famous Lincoln Center. There, she
continued playing the piano and writing songs.
After graduation, Vanessa moved to Hell's Kitchen,
where she worked as waitress five nights a week
and performed at local clubs. At home, she often
stayed up late recording her demo tapes.
In 2001, Vanessa was signed to A&M Records and
in February 2002, her debut single ‘A
Thousand Miles’, hit the Top Ten and
its video became a smash on MTV. As a result, Rolling
Stone magazine named her as one of the Top Ten Artists
to Watch in 2002.
In April 2002, she released her debut album, Be
Not Nobody. Her second single, ‘Ordinary
Day’, also hit the charts and its video
was also a hit on MTV. Two years later, Vanessa
released her second album, Harmonium. |
