Born on 5 June 1969 in Buffalo,
New York, Brian McKnight grew up as a member of
the church choir. With a gospel background, McKnight
explored other genres of music. In his early teens,
he exercised writing soft jazz instrumentals and
performed his originals with his band at local venues.
After sending out several demo tapes to various
record companies, McKnight’s demo tape caught
the attention of Mercury Records' president who
was so impressed with his voice. Within two weeks,
McKnight was signed to a record deal. His first
release on Mercury, 'The Way
Love Goes', reached number 11 after 19 weeks
on the Billboard R&B charts. His next single,
'Love Is', a duet with
Vanessa Williams, reached number 3 on the Billboard
pop charts.
Besides being a singer, McKnight is a songwriter,
multi-talented musician, arranger, and producer.
He released his album, Anytime (1997)
which features the single 'You
Should Be Mine', followed by a Christmas
album, Bethlehem (1998),
Back at One (1999),
Superhero (2001) and
U Turn (2003).
A divorce and some time playing guard for the California
ABA basketball team (The Ontario
Warriors), McKnight kept out of the music
industry for a couple of years before Gemini (2005)
marked his return. |
