Steve Coogan, a Winterbottom veteran,
plays both Tristram Shandy, the hero of the novel,
and himself playing Tristram. While Tristram struggles
with watching the torturous and humorous antics
that accompany his birth, a conceit that preoccupied
Sterne, Steve struggles to balance competing forces
in his life: a girlfriend who has come four hundred
miles with their newborn to see him, an agent trying
to cover up a potential scandal, an attractive assistant
director and a coterie of hangers on who suck his
life dry. Is Steve Tristram? Or is Tristram Steve?
